Craft spirits tasting and other food and drink events

The Chicago Botanic Garden is hosting a craft spirits tasting featuring quarter-ounce portions of bourbon, white and rye whiskey, pistachio nut liqueur, scotch, vodka, gin, rum, brandy, and creme brandy liqueur. Death’s Door Spirits, Templeton Rye Spirits, Angel’s Envy, Rhum Clement, Dumante, and Kindred Spirits are represented and will share the ingredients and techniques used in their distillation processes. Roam the gardens and snack on cocktails and small bites (for purchase).

Hoyt's Chicago is marking its first anniversary by offering free specialty cocktail tastings, free Goose Island beer samples from 5 to 8 PM, free passed appetizers from 4:30 to 5:30 PM ($3 after), live music by acoustic artist Nicholas Barron, and prize giveaways including a two-night stay at the Setai Fifth Avenue in New York.

Femme du Coupe continues its Mad Men month of March with "Cocktails With a Curve: Cocktails for the Joan Holloway in You." Attendees will learn to make the French 75, the St-Germain Fizz, and the Last Word.

Alliance Française is kicking off its monthlong Festivale de la Francophonie with the Soirée Commune Festival. Belgian, Canadian, French, Haitian, Quebecois, Romanian, Swiss, and Vietnamese food samples are provided with live cabaret, French jazz, and karaoke.

The Signature Room and WDRV are collaborating for their second annual Wine and Rock Pairing Event. The Drive DJ Bob Stroud will pair a classic rock song with each of the 20 vineyards featured, more than 100 reds and whites from all over the west coast, Europe, South America, and New Zealand. 6-9 PM, The Signature Room, 875 N. At the Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse's second annual gardeners exchange event there will be free gardening demos, workshops from 1 to 4 PM for $20 (cash only) including David Snyder of Uncommon Ground. Donations of used gardening supplies, cooking supplies, and publications will be accepted and available for purchase.

Butch McGuire's first annual chili cook-off for charity takes place today; participants can enter their chili to compete for three different awards. There will also be prizes including concert tickets, raffles, and food and drink specials, with proceeds benefiting Chicago House.

Every Sunday starting tonight, Fairmont Chicago's Eno Wine Room is hosting a blind wine tasting. Correctly identify age, region, country, and varietal and it's free. There will be two options of three wines based on difficulty level.

Learn to make hand-rolled Saint Patrick's Day- themed truffles (Guinness and Bailey's flavored) tonight at Katherine Anne Confections. It also includes Irish soda bread and wine. Reservations required.

At Brews for History, a fund-raiser supporting the 35th annual Chicago Metro History Fair, attendees can taste four Haymarket Pub and Brewery craft brews like Methias Imperial IPA, attend a talk by author Bill Savage, and participate in a raffle and silent auction for museum passes, sports memorabilia, and beer-related items. Reservations required.
