He's been riding his bike over 120,000 km.
And he keeps going.
This film is dedicated to him.
Thus begins the brief voice-over (in French with subtitles) to Guillaume Blanchet's recent short film, The Man Who Lived on His Bike. The product of more than a year spent biking through Montreal, Blanchet's film is a creative imagining of what it might be like to literally live one's whole life on a bike: sleeping, showering, ironing clothes, frying an egg, washing dishes.
In less than three minutes, the film conveys the story of a day: after getting ready in the morning, Blanchet drives to work, makes telephone calls and does paperwork, solves a Rubik's Cube, drives home, walks his dog, and waters the plants. All, mind you, while riding a bike. It's all pretty charming, none of it more so than the part where he watches TV: he becomes not only the watcher but the person on TV as well, rapping in an MTV music video and starring in an infomercial. Oh, and then he goes running. While biking. I'd tell you what happens at the end, but I'd hate to ruin the suspense. It's appropriate to Valentine's Day, though.
