Or, it could have just been the weather. . .

Current wind chill: minus 4

And this just in:

STATEMENT FROM MAYOR EMANUEL ON THE OCCURRENCE OF ZERO GUN CRIMES LAST NIGHT

The Chicago Police Department has pursued an aggressive strategy to put more cops on the beat in our communities and to get gangs, guns, and drugs off the street. Last night, that strategy produced the most important number in crime prevention: zero.

Last night, for the first time in nearly a year, there were no shootings and not a single gun crime occurred in the City of Chicago. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the men and women of Chicago’s finest who, day after day, put themselves in harm’s way to keep our streets safe. We are going to continue to apply our resources where they are needed most so that this achievement becomes the expectation for Chicago’s communities, not the exception.

And here's how it was reported in Britain (from the Daily Mail):

The city of Chicago marked its first 24 hours without a shooting or a murder in almost a year.

Wednesday was the first daylong break without deadly violence since early in 2011 in the city, which is known the world over for its historical ties to Al Capone and Prohibition-era gangsters.

I love the fact that the Sun-Times regurgitated this press release, made no mention of the weather or anything at all that would provide any context, and didn't even bother to provide a byline (not even something like "Sun-Times staff"): http://www.suntimes.com/news/10104690-418/… It would be interesting to know how many shootings are normal for a weeknight with that type of weather. Is it something like 15 or 20? Or is it around two or three? If it is the latter then obviously a decrease to zero is not really significant at all and isn't likely to indicate much about police strategies. Hopefully at some point some media organization will provide some of these numbers so that people can have a little bit of context to go with the press release.
