With first place in the national polls at stake, the undefeated 1959 LSU Tigers won an epic defensive struggle on Halloween night against the undefeated Mississippi Rebels. The final score was 7-3. LSU's reward was to have to face Mississippi again at the end of the season in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. It was a game the LSU coach didn't want to play, his team was flat, and Mississippi got its revenge, 21-0.
Now history was repeating itself. On November 5 the undefeated Tigers had edged the undefeated Crimson Tide in an epic defensive struggle. The final score was 9-6. LSU's reward was to have to face Alabama again for the national championship in New Orleans.
Apparently nothing stokes the endorphins like a second chance. And nothing depletes them like the message that the first time you did something brutally hard it didn't count so you have to do it again.
The Tigers were flat Monday night and the Tide played the game of their lives. Alabama got its revenge, 21-0.
