Mama's a monster: The Magic Flute is back

Posted by Deanna Isaacs on 01.06.12 at 10:00 AM

After a holiday recess, Lyric Opera's deliciously low-tech production of The Magic Flute is back, with six more performances this month.

It's beautiful, funny, fast on its feet (for opera), and full of surprises, including a malevolent mom and a secretive, threatening clan that's a force for—but wait, that would be a spoiler. Here's a hint: Mozart was a Freemason. In a real-world sleight of hand, Prince Tamino, sung by tenor Charles Castronovo through tonight's performance (at 7:30), will take the form of another tenor, Alek Shrader, starting Monday. The final performance is January 22.
