Lit & Lectures / Books Calls for proposals: rivers and intersections

In anticipation of the 20th anniversary of Chicago River Day on May 12, the Friends of the Chicago River are accepting stories about the waterway. They’re seeking “voices from all aspects of the river’s history from bridge tenders to fishermen, kayakers and admirers to tell the story of what the Chicago River means to you.” Selected pieces will be published on the Friends’ website, and the best displayed in the Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum. Submissions should be e-mailed to mayala@chicagoriver.org by January 15.

Elsewhere, AREA Chicago is looking for proposals for its 12th issue, which is themed “Intersections”: “How is Chicago built and transformed at intersections? What happens at the crossing of streets, trajectories, political interests? How do we each occupy intersecting positions and histories? How do social movements address the intersections of local, regional and global forces?” They’d like 100-word pitches for pieces that might ultimately be 1,200-1,400 words. The deadline for the first round of proposals is January 30. More information, including further guidelines, is on AREA’s website.
