Sweater weather

Layering is one way to deal with cool temperatures, but when it starts to get really cold, all you want to do is bundle up in a sweater. Finding good sweaters, however, is harder than it sounds: they can't be too shapeless, boxy, bulky, or boring. Or cheap—acrylic is not known for its ability to keep you warm. Here are some knits that will keep you cozy without making you look like the Michelin man or a repressed 60s housewife—after the jump.

A slouchy sweater (left) is the chic equivalent of a Snuggie. Just make sure you wear something defined on the bottom to offset the looseness of the top. Robbi & Nikki cowl-neck pullover, $119 (down from $225) at lastcall.com.

This cardigan is an homage to the classic Chanel jacket and can be worn in the same way—i.e., dressed up or with jeans. Merino Cambon cardigan, $118 at jcrew.com.

Stripes aren't just for summer, as this casual number shows. The price is right too. Striped outfield sweater, $65 at Madewell.com.

Calling all size sixes: I've found you the perfect black cashmere cardigan, and it's marked down from a whopping $420 to $147. Inhabit cardigan at theoutnet.com.

At some point, usually around February, you can get pretty sick of sweaters. That's when you pull out the comfy yet super-stylish sweater dress! This version from SONIA by Sonia Rykiel is fabulously blousy on the top and sexy-snug on the bottom. And it's on sale too: $225 down from $450 at twentythirtyforty.net.

But "shapeless, boxy, bulky, or boring" is kind of my style. It works for me.

I'm into shapeless, boxy, and bulky, too, but boring is where I draw the line.

I'm all about the not-shivering. Cute sweaters* are great if you live in California. (And what is the point of a 3/4-sleeve sweater? Are you cold, or not? Make up your mind.) No, I went thrift-store Bean 25 years ago & never looked back. Those sweaters have a half-life greater than carbon-14's.

*Chanel: fantastic, but cannot be worn with tits.

At least two out of the three above commenters are men. Enough said.

Actually I dig that raglan doodad at the end but I bet the fake-tied-sweater-arms skirt-wrap thing is unfortunate in profile. The knot's in a bad locale.
