In this week's issue of the Reader, Mick Dumke and Ben Joravsky examine why politicians seem to be so spooked about reforming marijuana laws. In addition to their lengthy exploration, the feature includes two sidebars: one on pro-pot State Representative La Shawn Ford, and another on former gubernatorial candidate James Gierach, who now advocates on behalf of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. Also, the Reader now has a Reefer Reader, featuring an archive of all our weed-related reporting, as well as a rolling feed of all things pot on our bong, I mean blog.

Deanna Isaacs profiles DeVry University history professor Jerry Harris, who foretells a frightening future amid the rise of global capitalism.

Michael Miner explains the hypocrisy of sports broadcasters at Penn State's first college football game without Joe Paterno, who failed to mention opponent Nebraska University's own checkered sports history.

And, as always, there's Savage Love. This week: Lesbians, barf as aphrodisiac, and kinky conservative Christians.
