Bears grab Adam Dunn for QB

The Chicago Bears announced today they’ve acquired designated hitter Adam Dunn from the White Sox to replace injured quarterback Jay Cutler. Dunn will join the Bears in Oakland Sunday for their game against the Raiders.

Dunn, who is six-foot-six and 285 pounds, was a star high school quarterback in Texas. “I’m looking forward to a game with a bigger ball,” he said on the phone from Texas, as he packed his bags.

Bears coach Lovie Smith said he was impressed by the “moxie” Dunn showed through a miserable season with the Sox this year. Dunn will be “hard to tackle,” Smith said. He added that offensive coordinator Mike Martz wanted a player who “likes to go for the long ball.”

In return for Dunn, the White Sox have acquired the off-season rights to Bears wide receiver and kick returner Devin Hester, who will lead off and play center for the Sox when he’s not playing for the Bears. Hester has never played baseball "but he once sang ‘Take me out to the ballgame’ for the Cubs, so we think he can make the adjustment,” Sox general manager Kenny Williams said. Williams said he was confident Hester could improve on Dunn’s .159 average and no stolen bases this season.

Hester welcomed the new challenge. “I don’t follow the game closely, but I’m excited about returning fly balls for the Sox,” he said.

The teams will each pay half of the $42 million owed Dunn over the final three years of his contract. Williams told reporters he’d felt certain Dunn was “too big to fail” when he signed him last winter, but now he was grateful for the Bears’ bailout. The GM had mixed feelings about trading Dunn. He was going to "miss the big fella," but he said that sentiment was mostly offset by his "ecstasy, joy, euphoria, jubilation, and rapture” about the deal.

More news may be developing for the Sox. Williams has been talking with his boss, Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, who also owns the Chicago Bulls, about picking up guard Derrick Rose to play left “since he’s not doing anything.”
