Judith Miller and WMD at the Chicago Humanities Festival

At a surreal Chicago Humanities Festival panel discussion on “WikiLeaks and the First Amendment” at Northwestern University Saturday, a jaunty Judith Miller (now a Fox News commentator) defended both WikiLeaks' right to protect its sources and the erroneous weapons of mass destruction stories she wrote for the New York Times, which were used to help push us into war in Iraq.

At some point, “you go with the information you have,” Miller said, in response to a question from the audience about accuracy and dicey sources. “On WMD, what I was reporting reflected accurately what the intelligence community believed at the time.”

According to documents released by WikiLeaks, more than 100,000 Iraqis have been killed during the so-called Operation Iraqi Freedom. The questioner was rewarded with a smattering of applause and a wave of catcalls.

If you don't want someone to find out about it don't do it. You can't keep secrets when you are doing questionable things. It will come back to bite you.

“On WMD, what I was reporting reflected accurately what the intelligence community believed at the time.”

This comment by Judith Miller seems disingenuous. Rather, at best, it was that such segments of the intelligence community that she was allowed access to promoted that viewpoint, and she was manipulated successfully. When will she address that perspective?
