The Chicago Urban Art Society is getting pushed out of its spacious quarters at 2229 S. Halsted Street, where, as we noted, it was the pioneering tenant just 18 months ago. Immediately after the Handmade Holidays Craft Fair this Saturday, CUAS (site of the Reader's recent 40th anniversary bash) will relocate to 600 W. Cermak, in the riverside industrial corridor now being reinvented as the Spice Barrel District. Lauren Pacheco and Peter Kepha, the sister-brother team behind CUAS say they had to scramble to find the new digs, with only about a month's notice.
CUAS had quickly established itself as an active hub on South Halsted; Pacheco says it has events and exhibits booked into 2013, all of which they hope to transfer to their new home—which will be 1,300 square feet smaller, but more expensive. "We're devastated," she says. "This is really difficult. We're trying to stay committed to our mission."

This is horrible news. Lauren & co. are amazing have done such amazing work in that space. Deanna, any chance this story could get updated to answer the question of why they are being "pushed out"?
The building has been sold. It's just too bad whoever bought it has different plans for the space.
According to Scott Goodman of Sterling Bay Companies, which owns the building, it has not been sold but a new tenant who will occupy the entire facility is moving in.
