Chicago's contribution to National Punctuation Day

Posted by Sam Worley on 09.23.11 at 03:28 PM

The Chicago Reader copyediting division would like to inform you—in fact, we've just learned ourselves—that tomorrow is National Punctuation Day, according to some site on the Internet. This is a bittersweet occasion: while we're delighted to have an entire day devoted to our favorite hobby outside of drinking, we're less than thrilled that the NPD website nominated for "Dumbest Sign of the Year" a facade that graces Chicago's own Western Avenue. Ouch:

Incidentally, the NPD site is also hosting a contest to see who best can finesse 13 separate punctuation marks into one three-sentence paragraph. As a longtime practitioner in the art of long, overpunctuated sentences, I think I've got this one in the bag. Just ask my editor. He'll tell you.

Yes, Sam is known around the office for his punctuality.

I say it's for little girls unless there's some form of Russian roulette involving the Oxford comma.
