The ubiquitous Jon Langford (Mekons, Waco Brothers, Skull Orchard) has a new exhibit of visual art opening Friday at Thomas Masters Gallery. In addition to conventional paintings, the show includes a slew of the distinctive "song paintings" that recently appeared in the book accompanying Skull Orchard Revisited (Bloodshot), an elaborately dressed-up reissue of the group's debut album, which originally came out in 1998 on Sugar Free Records.

That 96-page hardcover is loaded with photographs, illustrations, anecdotes by Langford about the songs, and the aforementioned "song paintings"—lovely and distinctive works that combine a tune's lyrics with striking images central to its theme (you can see an example above). For the new version Langford added vocal harmonies courtesy of the Burlington Welsh Male Chorus, a group from Burlington, Ontario, that he's performed with sporadically over the past few years. It also includes remixed versions of three tracks left off the original release. Langford is from Wales, and the choir (as its name implies) sings in a traditional Welsh vocal style.

On Friday, September 23, Langford will be joined by guitarist and singer Jim Elkington and the Burlington Welsh Male Chorus for a low-key performance at the gallery at 7:30 PM (they will also perform the next day at this year's Hideout Block Party). The opening reception for the exhibit is this Friday, September 9, from 6 to 9 PM.

Below you can listen to one of the tunes from the new album.
