Lyric Opera's new AGMA contract includes a paycut

Posted By on 08.22.11 at 05:44 PM

Did the union blink? Lyric Opera of Chicago announced the terms of its new contract with the American Guild of Musical Artists late today, thanking the union membership "for partnering with us to reach a settlement that supports the financial integrity of the company." Translation: a five percent cut in base pay. The contract covers only the 2011/2012 season, but also includes a "framework" for a 2013 production of Oklahoma! Union president James Odom put it this way: "AGMA artists have invested in Lyric Opera." AGMA, which represents Lyric's singers, dancers, actors, and production staff, had threatened a strike.
