"And I'll never have that recipe again . . . "

Mike Sula's feature on the new Filipino spot Rowie's Bakery contains a reference that I have to confess escaped me initially. Describing a bright green cake made with coconut and pandan leaf, he terms it "straight out of 'MacArthur Park,'" and while I'm enough of a child of the 70s that I had dim recollections of Donna Summer singing the song, I had never picked up on the lyrics. Little wonder.

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark.
All the sweet, green icing flowing down.
Someone left the cake out in the rain.

I don't think that I can take it.
'Cause it took so long to bake it.
And I'll never have that recipe again.

Turns out these lines by Jimmy Webb, first recorded by his drinking buddy the actor Richard Harris, are rather notorious.
