Over the years Vandermark has developed strong, lasting connections to drummers—particularly Hamid Drake and Paal Nilssen-Love—and Daisy clearly belongs in that company. The pair worked together most extensively in the Vandermark 5, but Daisy has also been a part of a growing number of Vandermark-helmed projects, including the Resonance Ensemble and Topology. The improvised performances on this new album make plain that the musicians have developed a profound, organic rapport, and each of the five lengthy pieces (ranging from seven to 20 minutes) all progress through disparate episodes—including high-energy free jazz, toe-tapping near-swinging passages, and riff-oriented grooves—in the most natural way possible. Whereas their playing together in V5 was hypertaut, here they sound more at ease, regardless of the intensity level. Below you can check out one of the album's pieces, featuring Vandermark playing clarinet.
