The biggest surprise about today's announcement that Jeanne Gang's Studio Gang Architects will design a new home for Writers' Theatre on its current Glencoe site? The absence of any indication that Writers' owns that property. And it doesn't. Writers' executive director, Kate Lipuma, says the Woman's Library Club of Glencoe will continue to own the land. Writers' has signed a 99-year lease agreement. The theater company will fund and own the new building, accommodating club activities.
Lipuma says it's too early to put a figure on the project cost, but Writers'—known for intimacy—is looking to roughly double its audience space, with at least 200 seats in the main theater, which currently holds 108. Also on the table: expansion of the company's second stage, now a 50-seat black box two blocks away, to a 75- to 99-seat space, which might be incorporated into the new building. Lipuma figures completion is "three to four years off."
