Music / Post No Bills Two sides of British bassist Dominic Lash

Lash moves fluidly between jazz, free improvisation, and contemporary classical music. I first heard him in the Convergence Quartet, a transatlantic group with trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum, drummer Harris Eisenstadt, and UK pianist Alexander Hawkins; on last year's terrific Song/Dance (Clean Feed) it expertly pushes simple composed themes in alternately pensive, lyrical, and turbulent directions. Earlier this year Lash moved to New York, and he's spending this week in Chicago playing in a variety of contexts. He'll be one of the performers at Sunday's Aperiodic concert, and then he'll play a couple of shows with good-looking improvising groups. On Monday he'll improvise at Myopic with clarinetist James Falzone, then head over to the Skylark where he'll join forces with alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella, guitarist Jeff Parker, and drummer Tim Daisy. On Wednesday he'll be at the Hideout with Parker, Daisy, Falzone, and trombonist Jeb Bishop.
