Former Bank of America Cinema and current CIMMfest programmer Michael W. Phillips screens two early documentaries about the Vice Lords in his South Side Projections screening series:
Robert Ford's 1963 The Corner shows the street gang in the first years after its 1958 founding in North Lawndale, with gang members' voiceovers "powerful in their self-awareness... we hear an articulation of the despair and hopelessness that these young men have about their prospects for a job and financial security, and their knowledge of being trapped in a cycle of poverty," Jason Halprin writes at Cine-File.
DeWitt Beall's 1970 Lord Thing shows the gang at the height of its powers as a criminal enterprise, embracing black power and a becoming political force in city politics.
Poet and musician Orron Marshall and other former Vice Lords will hold a post-screening discussion along with local historians and activists.
Thursday 6/30 at 7:30 PM at the South Side Community Art Center, 3831 S. Michigan Ave.
