On the Separation Between Church and NBC

NBC's issued an apology to everyone who spent their Father's Day stewing in anger over the network's decision to leave out "under God" and "indivisible" from a golf show-related recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. "Regrettably, a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out" of the U.S. Open, said announcer Dan Hicks. "It was not done to upset anyone, and we'd like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it."

Thank you for addressing our concerns, Dan Hicks. Thank you so much.

People had actually used their Twitters to call for an NBC boycott over this matter and everything. People use their Twitters for so much these days, don't they? It's so convenient and easy to use. Anyhow. Look—@jennisahottie's upset:

@1CaCracker's also mad:

And many, many others were incensed as well. Over a golf-show Pledging! Just imagine if this were over the Super Bowl or some other real sporting event. But seriously, maybe this is just all about timing. Maybe yesterday there were super-long lines at all of America's all-you-can-eat places, because of the holiday, and so the famished patriot families got frustrated while they stood and waited, watching life and more fortunate people carrying platefuls of roast beef and ham go by, and got out their smartphones to look for something new to get angry about, as family units. And so they went to the outrage website Fox Nation and read about this godless NBC golf show deal—which ever-so-neatly synthesizes the American life-staples of God, nationalism, and television—and in doing so found the perfect conversation topic for Sunday dinner/after-dinner fury-tweeting.

Who knows. Here's the offending video, edited by the president of Final Cut Pro, Barack Obama:

Maybe now that NBC put God back into the Pledge, the network can stay on the airwaves. America's most-talented kinda depends on it.

If your father's day was ruined by this, I hope you don't have children. Time to grow up everyone.

"Under God" being a bogus latecoming addon to the original, and being a dubious assertion, there's some reason for the network to try and not offend anyone with theocratic propaganda. After all, anyone who thinks the phrase reflects some kind of reality can still do so even though some distant golf hypesters omit it from their litany.

The "indivisible" part is more interesting. NBC decided to pander to the godless atheists on the one hand and balance it out by pandering to the Rick Perry secessionists on the other? This may be the most creative thing NBC has done in several decades. Kudos to them.

The best part about all this is that none of the jerks crying about the omission have any clue that the Pledge of Allegiance was written by a Socialist.
