Police Identify House, Witnesses in Alleged Alshaibi Beating

Posted by Ed M. Koziarski on 03.08.11 at 04:32 PM

Authorities in Fairfield, Iowa, confirmed Tuesday afternoon that after a door-to-door canvass of the area, police had identified the house where filmmaker Usama Alshaibi was allegedly beaten early Sunday morning, and that police and investigators from the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations were questioning witnesses.

Alshaibi told police he was disoriented after being punched and kicked in the head and called racial slurs at a party, and couldn't remember which house in his Fairfield neighborhood had been the site of the attack.

"We're interviewing people who were there and trying to get as much information as we can to determine whether or not charges should be filed, and what charges should be filed," Tim Dille, attorney for Jefferson County, in which Fairfield is located, said in a phone interview.

"It's being investigated as an assault. If it's determined that an assault has occurred, the Iowa Code has provisions for a hate crime enhancement, and if it's determined that's appropriate, we will charge [suspects] with that."

Dille said no suspects had yet been identified. "We're just trying to determine who was involved, what happened, and the exact set of circumstances that did occur," he said.

But a guy from Iowa said this never happened. Or if it did happen, it went down differently. Or if it happened as reported, it was justified. Or if it was unjustified, it was understandable...

I think MrJM doesn't believe Alshaibi or doesn't want to believe Alshaibi. In any event Alshaibi's sever beating can hardly be justified. That said, however, what was he doing crashing parties? Not so smart. Naive at best. Masochistic perhaps.

@Anthony P - You need to take your Irony Detector into the shop to have it re-calibrated. It doesn't even catch the painfully obvious stuff.

It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out given how much effort people are putting into smearing Alshaibi.

Agreed. I'll just say that I was a lot less cynical before this infamous event:

Now I believe in hearing from all sides before making any judgments. It's why we have a legal system in the first place.

That said, even IF he went into a party uninvited, unwanted, whatever - they could have just asked him to leave. It's not like he was breaking in during the middle of the night.

"Now I believe in hearing from all sides before making any judgments."

You didn't previously?

Nice to see that you people are taking a measured approach to this matter.

"Local people here agree that he got off easy."

Yeah... and "local people" said the same thing about Emmett Till.

Its so obvious that Usama is not to blame. These hateful teenagers were probably sitting around talking a bout Usama Bin Laden, and their indiscriminate hate for Arabs when out of the blue an Arab film maker who happens to be making a film about Arab discrimination in America happened to walk in their house. I dont believe he was trespassing either. Everyone knows that teenagers always invite middle aged strangers into their house parties. If you cant see that his injuries are clearly from punches and kicks (notice the black eye, and swelling) then you dont know anything about punching someone in the face.

Seriously though, if you've ever watched a fight or been in one, these injuries are not consistent with being punched.
