Music / Post No Bills Tonight: the Return of Colorlist

Rumback has billed the gig as a "pre-record release show," since the duo have a four-track EP, The Fastest Way to Become the Ocean, due in April from the British label Serein. Colorlist's basic modus operandi is unchanged: Gorczynski creates repeating patterns by sampling his own sax and/or harmonium, then improvises over them while Rumback keeps time and adds extra coloration. The new record was produced by Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv, and he helps the duo use overdubbing to give the EP's four tracks greater depth and variety than the group can manage live. Guitarist Jeff Parker guests on the lengthy "Nine Lives," one of Colorlist's more extroverted pieces, and Liz Payne of the Zoo Wheel adds gentle singing (a first for the band) and melodica to "What We Have Left." Tonight's concert will be just Gorczynski and Rumback.
