Music / Post No Bills Ken Vandermark's Resonance Festival Opens Wednesday

The full ensemble will debut new compositions by Vandermark this Sunday afternoon at the Chicago Cultural Center (I've got a Critic's Choice on that show in the next issue of the Reader), but that grand event will be preceded by two nights of improvised small-group concerts in Chicago, beginning tomorrow (they take the show on the road to Milwaukee on Friday and Saturday). In 2009 Not Two released a ten-CD box set called Resonance, and eight of the CDs feature improvisations from ad hoc duos, trios, and quartets assembled from members of the ensemble: trumpeter Magnus Broo and tubaist Per-Ake Holmlander (both from Sweden), drummers Tim Daisy and Michael Zerang (both from Chicago), bassist Mark Tokar and reedist Yuriy Yaremchuk (both from the Ukraine), reedist Mikolaj Trzaska (the lone Polish musician), New York trombonist Steve Swell, and Vandermark. Since the original meeting of the group, Yaremchuk has been replaced by Polish reedist Waclaw Zimpel, and for these concerts local bassist Devin Hoff will sub for Tokar, who had visa problems.
Two of the bands performing Wednesday night at the Hideout have actual names, and one, the Reed Trio, is about to release its first album, Last Train to the First Station (Kilogram); the group consists of Vandermark, Trzaska, and Zimpel, and its sound suggests a less roiling and intense version of Sonore, Vandermark's reed trio with Mats Gustafsson and Peter Brötzmann. Inner Ear is Holmlander, Daisy, Swell, and Trzaska, and the third set will be ad hoc. On Thursday evening at Elastic, Vandermark and Daisy will reprise their sporadic duo; Hoff, Trzaska, and Zerang will play a trio set; and there will be another ad hoc grouping.
