In the early 1900s, Havana pimp Alberto Yarini Ponce de Leon was gunned down by French rivals who controlled prostitution in Cuba, igniting an uprising that ousted the French from the island and made Yarini a folk hero.

Ernesto Daranas's 2009 Cuban entry for the best foreign language film Oscar, Fallen Gods, follows a college professor whose research on Yarini lands her in the middle of a turf war between modern day Havana pimps.

Fallen Gods screens in the monthly Reel Film Club series, Tuesday 2/22 at 676 Media Center, 676 N. LaSalle St., 2nd Floor. Reception with wine and appetizers at 6 p.m., screening at 7. $25; Latino Cultural Center members $20.

This looks very exciting and riveting. I hope it makes it to Texas. Beautiful film.
