Winter Kill

Baltimore Afro-American, October 19, 1923. When black people started beating feet out of the agrarian South in favor of the northern industrial centers, the Southern establishment tried to stem the outbound tide of cheap labor with pseudo-Darwinian blather to the effect that northern winters were fatal to the African-American constitution. Black papers like the Chicago Defender and the Baltimore Afro-American were continually calling bullshit. How lucky were they to have a big white insurance firm affirm that even up North, black folks were living to the ripe old age of 56?

Any idea why this cartoon was delivered in the form of a song?

Are the lyrics a parody of a well-known song of the day?

Is this where Mark Russell got his start?

The tragedy is that black males in the US still only have a life expectancy of around 65 years overall, probably a little less in the South.

Only thing I can relate it too is a contemporary comic strip called either "Those Days Are Gone For Good" or "Them Days Is Gone For Good," I forget which.

"The tragedy is that black males in the US still only have a life expectancy of around 65 years overall, probably a little less in the South."

Oddly earnest input from you, F. You feeling okay?

No, I got laid off from my job delivering newspapers. Perhaps you can find some more hilarious examples of articles on mob violence against religious minorities to cheer me up?
