Over at Vocalo, political reporter Sam Hudzik writes that 68 Cook County judges are up for retention on November 2—and not all have received endorsements from the local legal community. The Alliance of Bar Associations for Judicial Screening compiled the judicial evaluations of 11 local bar associations in a handy-dandy chart, as those groups differed in their recommendations. And the Judicial Performance Commission of Cook County—a new pilot project of the not-for-profit Chicago Appleseed Fund for Justice—came up with its own evaluation, which isn't included in the Alliance's report.

Only one judge received across-the-board pans from both the Commission and the bar associations: Dorothy F. Jones, elected judge in 1992 and currently presiding over civil cases involving $1,500 or less.

Since no retention judge in Illinois has ever NOT been retained, I think it's a civic duty to thoughtlessly vote against them all, to cancel out the vote of one person who thoughtlessly voted for them all.

the judiciary is supposed to be a check against the passions of the people. people should not vote to put judges on the bench, nor to retain them to the bench. the other two branches of government are the place for the popular vote.

i believe it is our civic duty to abstain from judicial elections.
