A funny guy from Chicago, John Pick, copped a prize over the summer. He won the grand prize in the "Go Mamet Yourself" contest, which called on contestants to send in a video of themselves answering the question, "What's your favorite David Mamet quote?" Pick must have done some rooting around. He picked "The Dog," which you'll find in the Mamet collection Goldberg Street: Short Plays and Monologues.
The grand prize was a night in New York and a couple tickets to the Mamet play Race, which sponsored the contest with broadwaysbestshows.com. Here's where you go to read the details and see Pick's video.
Race got mixed reviews, ran nine months, closed in August, and turned a profit. Without it, we would not have Pick's "The Dog."
We keep an eye on John Pick because he's family. His late father, Grant Pick, was one of this paper's most celebrated feature writers, his mother, Kathy Richland, a frequent photographer. He's out in LA now but we get reports. Here's his website, and here's his latest video, "Up and Coming Terrorists." In any line of work, it's hard to catch a break.
