Sometime Sunset Kelley Stoltz Previews To Dreamers Friday

Even if you don't know Kelley Stoltz's name, there's a good chance you know his music. A few years ago his song "Birdies Singing," which sounds like the early Kinks at their best, appeared in a Regions Financial ad so ubiquitous that even dogs recognize it, and a 2008 Marriott commercial featured "Memory Collector," which sounds like the results of a detente between 70s John Cale and Wings-era Paul McCartney. Nine years ago Stoltz recorded and released Crockodials, a song-for-song replica of Echo & the Bunnymen's debut LP, Crocodiles; he opened for them on a stateside tour this spring, when the scheduled support act was grounded by that Icelandic volcano, and come December he's doing the same on a tour of the UK.

Stoltz's knack for re-creating choice sounds from other people's records has made him an in-demand producer and sideman for the likes of Thee Oh Sees and Sonny & the Sunsets. He'll play keys for the Sunsets when they come to the Beat Kitchen on Friday; they'll also back him for his opening set, which will presumably preview songs from To Dreamers (Sub Pop), a swell new album that Sub Pop will release in October.
