Fiction Issue: Call for Submissions

Posted by Kiki Yablon on 09.15.10 at 03:34 PM

HELLO_.jpg
This December the Reader will publish its 11th annual Pure Fiction issue—a collection of short stories from mostly local fiction writers paired with illustrations by mostly local artists.

You may wish to browse our fiction issue archive, which includes fantastic contributions both from out of the blue and from some names you might recognize.

We'll be considering submissions from now until November 3. Please send them to fiction@chicagoreader.com. We prefer text pasted into e-mail rather than attachments. It's hard to find room these days for pieces over 10,000 words, but to a degree we're flexible on length. We pay for those we publish.

Yes, but we usually give preference to Chicagoans.

Is YA fiction accepted?

Would you accept fiction from a Chicagoan (born and raised) who now lives in TN?

@Awill: I imagine there are YA stories that might appeal to actual adults, so I wouldn't say no . . .

@LadySorrow: Yes.

You say you prefer text pasted into e-mail, but my story is called "Viagra Cialis Free Rolex", so I'm concerned you won't get it..?

When will decisions be announced?

Do you send an acknowledgement of a submission? I’m worried mine might have been spammed out.

Dear Kiki,
I was a little surprised that I did not get an e-mail about my submission not making the cut in your Fiction Contest.
The way I found out was through an NU e-mail from Sandi Wisenberg telling us Elad's story had won. Of course I am delighted for him. The small courtesy of an e-mail advising the winners were announced would have been great.
Sincerely,
Windiciti

@windiciti

Kiki's last day at the Reader, sadly, was December 14. She hasn't been replaced yet, and in certain important ways she can't be. That may have been why you didn't receive an e-mail.
