Billing itself as "the premier creative conference for motion design, visual effects, sound design and interface technology," MGFest opens Wednesday with a Meetup Massive Launch Party from 5-6:30 p.m. at Tantrum, 1023 S. State St.
That's followed by a Best of 2009 screening at 7 p.m. and "Motion Art & Design" program at 8:30, featuring video from Herzog & de Meuron, Lucas Arts, N.A.S.A. with Tom Waits & Kanye West, Basement Jaxx, Warp Records, Ninja Tune, Royskopp, Puma, and Max Hattler. The screenings are at Columbia College's Ferguson Auditorium, 600 S. Michigan Ave. "Motion Art & Design" plays again Friday at 3 p.m. at the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St.
On Thursday from 7-10 p.m. "MATCH^" showcases seven musicians who were paired with seven video artists and given one week to collaborate on a 20-minute A/V show at the Cultural Center.
On Friday, sound designers Benn Jordan (The Flashbulb) and Richard Devine offer a workshop from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Lumen Eclipse's "Somatic Death, Soma Life," screens at 2 p.m. at the Cultural Center. "Super String Social" networking event and gear showcase 6-10 p.m. at Leviathan motion graphics studio, 327 N. Aberdeen, Suite 201.
Saturday, sold out workshop "Cinema 4D Essentials" with Darrin Frankovitz, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Future Media Concepts, 200 S. Michigan Ave. #910. "Growing Up CAD" performances, food, drinks and art auction, 5-10 p.m. at Chicago Art Department, 2003 S. Halsted St.
Sunday, animation workshop with Ross Gerbasi and 15letters at Future Media Concepts. MGFest concludes with "The Third Sun: Landing Party & Installation Art Screening," 10 p.m.-2 a.m. at Rodan, 1321 N. Milwaukee Ave.
