Walter E. Massey Will Be SAIC Prez

Posted by Deanna Isaacs on 06.21.10 at 03:06 PM

The School of the Art Institute—which has been operating with a vacuum at the top since president Wellington "Duke" Reiter departed abruptly in April—announced today that physicist and retired Morehouse College president Walter E. Massey will take over the president's job starting September 13. The SAIC has also hired administrator Elissa Tenny away from Bennington College; she'll become provost and senior vice president of academic affairs in August.

The much-honored Massey was president of the all-male, historically black Morehouse from 1995 to 2007. Before that he was a University of Chicago professor and Argonne National Laboratory director, Brown University professor and dean, University of California provost, and head of the National Science Foundation under Bush I. Tenny joined tiny, rural Bennington after 27 years at New York's New School, where she had risen to acting dean.
