While the world seems to have (not altogether unjustifiably) lost its head to the refined delights of French macarons, sometimes all it takes to score a direct hit to the cerebral pleasure center is an old-fashioned coconut macaroon. These oddly shaped dollops can be found among the wide assortment of Middle Eastern sweets, hot spinach and cheese pies, and fresh zatar bread at Albany Park's Sanabel Bakery & Grocery. They have an almost glazed, brittle browned exterior that protects a sweet, soft core even hardened foes of shredded coconut might find acceptable.
