It's not all grim news in local retail: when another space in the historic Monadnock Building became available, Michael Blossom, the owner of women's clothing boutique Florodora, decided to open Florodora Shoes just a couple doors down from the original shop, at 348 S. Dearborn. He thinks the recession didn't affect him as much as it might have in other neighborhoods, noting that there's always street traffic during the week.

Blossom chooses footwear to go with styles in the clothing boutique—romantic and feminine yet defiantly urban offerings like lace booties, imaginatively cut-out pumps in nude and dusty pink shades, and satin ballerina flats festooned with shiny baubles on the toe. Labels include Coclico, Biviel, Candela NYC, and Ann Roth, with more to come in the fall. Prices range from $125 to $400.

Also on offer are a selection of bags by Jesslyn Blake and Magnes Sisters, as well as jewelry and tights. It's open Monday through Friday from 10 to 7 and Saturday 11 to 5.
