LCD Gets Throwed

Posted By on 05.24.10 at 03:50 PM

There seem to be two schools of thought regarding LCD Soundsystem. One sees them as an indie-rock band with some dance-music characteristics, while the other sees James Murphy and company as a dance-music project that's borrowed a few aesthetic elements from indie rock. As I hope I make clear in my recent review of This Is Happening, I'm with the latter group. Dance music doesn't have to be wholly or even mostly electronic to count as such, and though he lifts guitar tones from Bowie songs and entire melodies from Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks I think Murphy's grounded more in the tradition of disco and house musicians. And I feel that LCD's cover of "Throw," by Detroit techno godfather Carl Craig (recording under the pseudonym Paperclip People), backs me up on that.

The original, for comparison, after the jump.
