Show: EPMD "The string of albums Eric Sermon and Parrish Smith released in the late 80s and early 90s were a pivot point for rap's transition from cold-blooded east-coast electro minimalism of the form's breakthrough artists to the warmer, more organic G-funk from which its first megastars would spring," writes Miles Raymer.

9 PM, the Shrine, 2109 S. Wabash, 312-753-5700, $14, $7 in advance

Dinner: Cuatro Sophisticated nuevo Latino comfort food in a sophisticated space.

2030 S. Wabash Ave., 312-842-8856, cuatro-chicago.com

Show: Nite Jewel This LA-based outfit, fronted by Ramona Gonzalez, plays sex-flunky adult-contemporary tunes that are all about vent-brush feathered-hair melodies and greaseball bass with its fly unzipped.

9 PM, Funky Buddha Lounge, 728 W. Grand, 312-666-1695, $10.

Dinner: The Motel Bar Though the ambience is only mildly retro, the Motel Bar is a bit of a throwback to a time when sophisticated cocktailing was the thing to do, and a roomier, more casual alternative to its neighbor, the loud and impossibly crowded bar at Japonais.

600 W. Chicago Ave., River West, 312-822-2900, themotelbar.com

Movies

Show: Loulou Maurice Pialat's 1980 film is a study in erotic revolution; in it, sex becomes a force that shatters not only class allegiances and social patterns but even the order represented by traditional narrative structure.

7pm, Univ. of Chicago Doc Films, 1212 E. 59th St., 773-702-8575

Dinner: Cedars Mediterranean Kitchen This Lebanese restaurant offers the usual suspects: marinated chicken kebabs, falafel, and hummus to spread on unusually good pita. Portions are generous, which makes it a great stop for those on a student budget.

Performing Arts

Show: Claymore Presents: The Free Improv Show Smart and confident, bordering on cocksure, they're definitely a group to watch.

10pm, Playground Theater, 3209 N. Halsted St., 773-728-1682, $5

Dinner: Chicago Diner offers creative veggie, vegan, and gluten-free dishes in a comfortable space lined with old-fashioned wooden booths.

3411 N. Halsted St., 773-935-6696, veggiediner.com
