The Costume Institute Gala

The Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Gala is the Oscars of the fashion industry—although the perp walk tends to be much more interesting. Anything goes—short, wide, caftan—but a few themes popped up, among them, sumptuous gowns in luscious purple and plum shades.

Sky blue was another popular hue, one that hasn't been seen in a while in evening wear. Paired with daring yet elegant 40s-inspired styling in a dress from RM by Roland Mouret, it's unexpected yet appropriate.

Some women are undeniably good girls (hello Kristin Davis), others are bad (Angelina Jolie, no matter how many orphans she adopts). When a good girl dresses bad, it's hit or miss. Elizabeth Banks's oeuvre has often involved characters with cheerleader looks that mask crazy-girl tendencies, but her vampiness looks forced here.

And while a jumpsuit is an edgy choice that I applaud, it just looks weird on Tina Fey. Hey, wholesome ladies, we love you the way you are! No need to go all bad Sandy on us.
