SXSW Report: Day Two, Part One

Admittedly it's not proper journalistic form to lead with an obscenity, but: Holy fuck! Thee Satisfaction! They're everything you (OK, everything I) want from rap and more! Seattle's best-kept secret—but hopefully not for long.

I headed to their show on a tip from fellow critic Ann Powers of the LA Times, who said they were the only folks she was really adamant about checking out during SXSW. Their show was running three hours behind, so I kept walking the three blocks from the Kill Rock Stars showcase back to the Thee Satisfaction show to check if they'd started playing, hoping all the effort would be worth it. If I had known how good they were going to be, I would have been willing to wait in a Porta-Potty the whole time.

Queer, Afrocentric, feminist, skilled, and both funny and fun, Thee Satisfaction have a two-MC/one-DJ setup. I know that my thumbnail description strings together the good parts with stuff that isn't exactly enticing—I normally wouldn't get out of bed for feminist hip-hop from Seattle—but the two girl MCs are like Althea & Donna with a little Monie Love thrown in for good measure, or maybe like Erykah Badu split into two ladies, and they rap about good vibes and seducing your girlfriend. The crowd of 35 was collectively knocked out. I will be shocked if I see a show with as much wow power before I leave Austin—or anytime soon.
