The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
  • The Grapes of Wrath (1940)

Our movie writers are fanning out this week, bringing their insight and expertise to the farthest reaches of Chicagoland.

Ed M. Koziarski, who mans this blog and frequently reports on the indie filmmaking community in Chicago, will appear at the Lake County Film Festival with his wife and artistic collaborator, Junko Kajino. They'll present their recent dramatic feature The First Breath of Tengan Rei and participate in Q-and-A sessions afterward. The screenings take place at College of Lake County, 19351 W. Washington Street, Grayslake, on Friday, March 5, at 8 PM; Saturday, March 6, at 8:10 PM; and Sunday, March 7, at 5:10 PM. Tickets are $7, $5 for students.

The following night, Monday, March 8, Andrea Gronvall, a longtime contributor to the movie section, will introduce Elmhurst College's new film series "Poverty on the Silver Screen." Her talk begins at 6:30 PM at Schaible Science Center on the college campus in Elmhurst. It will be followed by a screening of John Ford's 1940 classic The Grapes of Wrath; the series continues with Sydney Pollack's They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (Tue 3/9, 7 PM), Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York (Wed 3/10, 7 PM), Kelly Reichardt's Wendy and Lucy (Mon 3/15, 7 PM), and Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan's Slumdog Millionaire (Tue 3/16, 7 PM). All screenings are free.
