So where was Nickersonville? I've never heard of it.
Soeaking of the mordant tone newspapers sometimes took back then, I once read a bunch of old Varietys and there is nothing so black as the obituaries back in those days of long, lonely, hard-drinking cross-country engagements in the lower rungs of show biz. Vaudevillians seemed to throw themselves out of windows or drink bichloride of mercury or expire gratefully of a mild case of pneumonia like you or I pick up dry cleaning.
Thanks, ChiBkBabe.
Michael: I think Nickersonville may have been a neighborhood designation rather than a separate town. It makes sense that you want to keep your fencing operation within city limits, close to both customers and lots of alienable property. There used to be a Nickersonville Primary School at 2107 North Magnolia.
Old Variety mags are awesome. I spent 1000 years reading through the lot from the 1920s as part of my research for a book on early radio broadcasting. Their candid reportage on payola issues was indispensable.
