Davis and crew are rooted squarely in mainstream jazz and hardly push its envelope, but within the idiom they aren't afraid to take risks. Trumpet-led trios without chordal instruments are fairly scarce in jazz, in part because that horn is more physically demanding and unwieldy than a saxophone; all three players also make bold use of space and silence in their performances. The group is in the middle of an American tour that started in Washington, D.C., and is indeed going west, though only as far as Colorado. They play a free concert tomorrow night at the Whistler.
