Perhaps director Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr., the latest of dozens of actors to portray the supersleuth on film, should have taken some tips from The Sherlock Holmes Handbook: The Methods and Mysteries of the World's Greatest Detective, recently published by Quirk Books ($16.95).
The book is divided into three parts. Under "Detective Skills" you'll find topics like: How to Locate a Secret Chamber, How to Examine a Body at a Crime Scene, and How to Crack a Safe.
Among the subjects in "Survival Skills": How to Outwit a Criminal Mastermind, How to Fake Your Own Death, and How to Survive a Plunge Over a Waterfall.
And under "Life Skills" you'll learn: How to Stage a Dramatic Entrance, How to Deal With Women, How to Keep Your Mind Sharp, and, interestingly enough, How to Raise Bees. (Maybe what the movie needed was some bee-raising scenes.)
