The New Year Parade

  • "The New Year Parade"

Tom Quinn was a Philadelphia high school AV technician in 2003 when he began his film The New Year Parade with biology teacher Steve Beal.

The film, shot for $7,000, follows a brother and sister dealing with the dissolution of their South Philadelphia family. It won best narrative feature at the Slamdance Film Festival, is up for a John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award, and opens theatrically at Facets Cinematheque on Friday 12/11.

Quinn interviewed friends whose parents had divorced to develop the story, and set scripted scenes with nonprofessional actors against the real life background of the titular, 300-year-old working class celebration that is the Philadelphia Mummers Parade.

The New Year Parade screens Friday 12/11-Thursday 12/17 at Facets, 1517 W. Fullerton. Weekdays 7 and 9 PM. Saturday, 5, 7 and 9 PM. Sunday, 9 PM.
