ATL RMX = TTLLY RD

Posted by Miles Raymer on 12.10.09 at 04:09 PM

Over the past couple of years Adult Swim has semisecretly become just about the best record label on the Internet. Their African Swim compilation is probably the best collection of motherland hip-hop to be released over here. And apparently they put out a Witchdoctor record that I didn't know about? Who else is sort-of-secretly releasing Witchdoctor records? Nobody, that's who.

Their latest release is ATL RMX, a compilation of Atlanta rap songs remixed by hipster-friendly dance-type artists. Though it sounds potentially lame, it's a surprisingly solid collection. El-P treats Young Jeezy's vocals to a harsh industrial stomp, Michna gives Young Dro an icy electro makeover, and Prefuse 74 takes Shawty Lo into some weird sonic 'shroomland that's well stocked with delay pedals. And whoever decided to match up Gucci Mane and Flying Lotus obviously knows more about my musical desires than I do, because I never even imagined that combination. Thank you, Adult Swim music supervisor.
