Michael Gray and Howard Alk documented the early organizing efforts of Illinois Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton, and his death alongside fellow Panther Mark Clark at the hands of Chicago police at age 21 in 1969, in their 1970 film The Murder of Fred Hampton. It screens for free Wednesday 12/2 at the University of Chicacgo.
Screening at 3 PM, followed by panel discussions with Akua Njeri, Emory Douglas, Willie Calvin, Jeff Haas, Jane Rhodes and Ahmad Rahman, and art by Douglas. Haas signs his book The Assassination of Fred Hampton. At U of C International House, 1414 E. 59th St.
This clip starts with future Congressman Bobby Rush, then the Panthers' deputy defense minister, disputing states' attorney claims that Hampton and Clark were killed in a firefight. It also includes Deborah Johnson, cradling an infant Fred Hampton Jr., describing Hampton being shot to death beside her by the "pigs" while she was pregnant.
