"At heart, one of the things that makes us human...is our need to change things," says one of the paper artists profiled in Vanessa Gould's documentary Between the Folds. "It's also the heart of the appeal of origami, exploring the surprising magic of just how far you can change that square."

Between the Folds screens Saturday 11/28 at 2 PM at the Chicago Cultural Center.

The film explores not only aesthetics, but also the scientific applications of the ancient Japanese art, which is employed, for instance, for molecular modeling in pharmaceutical manufacture.

Jean Mishima, president of the Chicago Japanese American Historical Society, leads a paper folding workshop after the screening.

It's Saturday 11/28 at 2 PM at the Chicago Cultural Center's Claudia Cassidy Theater, 78 E. Washington.

I cannot tell you how often my family explores some new film, or book or event, or looks deeper into some aspect of local, national, or world politics, or cause, because of an article or short blog post in the Reader. We woke up late this Saturday morning with no plans but to laze about, enjoying the long holiday weekend, when we read this post and watched the trailer. The film looks fantastic, (we'd never heard of it 'til now) and we're going, but felt compelled to take a moment to thank all of your contributors for guiding us towards so many wonderful places.
