Really Cheap and Chic Holiday Glam

Posted by Heather Kenny on 11.24.09 at 10:56 AM

Ways to add holiday bling to your look on a budget—hardly an original idea this time of year, I know. But here are some ultra-cheap DIY ideas for those who'll be spending more on gifts and travel in the next six weeks than they are on their own wardrobes.

Plain headbands cry out for adornment. Glue, sew, or pin fabric flowers to fabric or plastic headbands. Go demure with tiny blooms, or use multiple kinds of large posies for a dramatic effect.

The bib necklace is being touted as this season’s must-have. There are cheapish versions, but you could make your own by sewing inexpensive necklaces, beads, buttons, or other gewgaws onto some stiff fabric (felt would work). Use ribbons for ties.

Glittery shoes give new life to that old LBD your family sees every other year. If you don't feel like investing in something with such a short shelf life, put vintage sparkly clip-on earrings to use as shoe clips. Or, if you're going somewhere where they won't mind vacuuming the next day, pick up an inexpensive pair of heels, head to the craft store for a glue gun and some crystals, and have at it.
