Postcards and Rugs by Mark Mothersbaugh

Posted by Peter Margasak on 11.12.09 at 01:06 PM

He's better known as front man for Devo and for his prolific work scoring TV shows and movies, but Mark Mothersbaugh is a visual artist as well. Back in 2005 I interviewed him about his music and about an exhibition of “corrected” antique photography he calls Beautiful Mutants that was happening at the time.

Tonight and tomorrow night he’s in town with Devo, who are playing two of their best albums top-to-bottom at the Vic, and he just so happens to have another exhibit going on, this one at David Leonardis Gallery. This show features an assortment of the custom-made diaristic postcards he’s been creating for friends and family for more than 30 years, along with a selection of rugs he’s designed. The gallery is hosting evening receptions on Friday and Saturday, and there’s a possibility Mothersbaugh will show up on Friday between 5 and 6:30 PM (Leonardis can make no promises). Either way, the art is worth checking out; the exhibit will be up until December 10.
