11/4 — Free Umbrella Music Festival Shows

Posted by Robyn Chang on 11.03.09 at 06:32 PM

As part of several satellite events surrounding the Umbrella Music Festival, reedist Hans Koch, whose work Reader critic Peter Margasak discusses here, will appear solo at the University of Chicago's Bond Chapel (1050 E. 59th) at 8 PM Wednesday and at Corbett vs. Dempsey (1120 N. Ashland) at 4 PM Friday.

The next night, catch Koch in an ad hoc quartet at 9 PM in "European Jazz Meets Chicago," the free kickoff event for the Umbrella Music Festival at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington), which starts at 6 PM. Other performers include Liudas Mockunas (Lithuania), Martin Brandlmayr (Austria), David Stackenas (Sweden), Gratkowski/Kaufmann/de Joode (Germany), and Guus Janssen (the Netherlands). These concerts represent some of the best improvising musicians on the European scene, some with their regular working groups, some in first-time collaborations with local musicians.

Another free satellite show, Friday at 12:15 PM at the Cultural Center, features pianist Guus Janssen performing with his brother Wim Janssen and Chicago bassist Anton Hatwich.
