Last week I emailed Dragos Moldoveanu, one of the people behind Chenilles et Papillons, to find out more about the rather mysterious site, which I mentioned in this post on the appeal of 18th-century fashion. Yesterday he wrote back:

Moldoveanu says that Chenilles et Papillons is mainly an art project, but "everything is for sale, so it is most like a virtual book showing things we have done and the kind of costumes we are able to realize for our customers." As that might indicate, he is also opening a shop, La Fuite a Varennes (the name refers to the attempt of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and their children to escape the French Revolution), at 36 Rue de Varenne in Paris at the end of the month. He'll carry a mix of his costumes and some antiques. One of his costumes would sure beat an Eiffel Tower miniature as a souvenir.

I just came back from a trip to Paris.
On one of my long and targetless walks in the city, I passed by the shop "La Fuite a Varenne"... The first thing that raised my attention was a gorgeous dress from 18th century displayed in the window of this antiques shop. It left me breathless once I started to pay attention to the details of it. I was literally and genuine impressed. I have a big interest in costumes, but that's not the reason I was so impressed: the way Dragos paid attention to each and every single detail left me without words! The way the silk was hand-painted and the way it was sewed, the colours and the accessories, the cut of the dress, the embroideries, all these were pure art! I always wanted to have the courage to create such costumes - just for the joy of displaying them and to treat them as an object of art. I think I saw Dragos in the back of the shop - in a small and cosy atelier, working at his table - a wonderful background baroque music was playing and he welcomed me with a smile and with a discreet head bow... The whole athmosphere was like timeless, a perfect environment for such a place: real works of art and antiques. Thank you Dragos for revealing me a perfect world that I've always wanted to feel! Good luck with your wonderful job and may your art works be a passport to all the sensitive souls that passes by the streets of Paris!
Most of all, I was truly and honestly proud that Dragos is from the same country as I am...

Thank you, Petre! You should enter and have a little chat, even if I am quite shy especially when I ocasionally speak my motherly language. I am very touched by your kind and enthousiastic comment.
