The Chicago Fashion Incubator at Macy's on State Street is now accepting applications for its 2010 session, which starts in March. Every year six local apparel designers are chosen to become designers-in-residence at Macy's on State Street, which provides office and production space and equipment, access to a showroom, and other resources. The designers are required to attend and complete a series of workshops and seminars offered throughout the year.
Besides a room of one's own, the incubator program offers something else highly prized by aspiring designers: publicity. The half-dozen designers will have their experiences documented on the Chicago Fashion Resource incubator blog and show the fruits of their labor at various events throughout the year. There's a $250 per month fee to cover "operating costs," but that's still pretty good compared to going it on your own.
